Muskets & Magic Four schools, one capped slot
Earth throws rocks. Fire holds the line. Light heals and beams. Death refuses to copy anyone.
Mage is the loudest class in Muskets & Magic and the easiest to waste. Nanoplex Studio gave each nation a different focus in this Roblox team PvP shooter, then often capped the slot so a public server cannot queue eight fireworks. Early access on PC, mobile, and console still uses mana, a Ctrl dash, and no guns. Crowns change the glove’s paint, not the school. This list is playtest-informed, not official. When rocks get retuned, Earth moves. When Sklirite changes, Light moves.
If you need the buttons, read how to play Mage before you take a cap. If you need why your nation has this glove, read the factions overview. Class rank for Mage as a job sits on the class tier list at A: high impact, often capped.
How to rank a school
We rank the fantasy you actually spawn with, not a theorycraft that mixes Fire Glove onto Sitari. You get one school per nation.
Criteria: range, team value, map flexibility, and how hard the kit punishes a tourist. A school that wins on two map types outranks a school that only slaps on one, unless that one is the manor everyone is voting.
Earth: the rock sniper
Earth Glove, Kingdom of Zemliya. Playtesters treat it as the long-range argument. Boulders arc. Still targets on Little Green and Prok’s Glade eat dirt. The lore says archmages raised the Great Stena; the round says you punish anyone who reloads like the hedge is a fortress.
Earth is the easiest school to value on musket maps because it does not need the enemy to clump as hard as Fire does. It still needs mana discipline. A Zemliyan Mage who dashes into melee is a piñata. A Zemliyan Mage who holds a lane and feeds the line with overhead rocks is why this school sits at the top of the four.
Earth is weaker in tight interiors where the arc has nowhere to live. Wickland windows can still work. Wickland closets do not. If the vote is all corridors, you are a support caster with a bad sightline, not a sniper.
Fire: line support
Fire Glove, Empire of Ignia. Fireballs and torrents from behind the muskets. Best when Zemliya or anyone else blobs a hedge, a doorway, or a flag pocket. Fire wants clumps and wants a Line Infantry screen. It is not a Rifleman with sparkles.
Fire sits just under Earth on open ticket maps because it asks more of your team. If your line is already scattered, you are cooking grass. If your line is a wall, you are the reason the wall advances. Final Stand forests make Fire awkward: trees eat sight, and Descendants of Death do not clump unless a Brute found a buffet.
The bicorne-on-fire joke is flavour. The real joke is a Fire Mage who takes the cap and then duels a Grenadier. Dash out, not in. Play behind the drum. You are A-tier as a class and second among schools because the kit is honest line artillery, not a solo carry.
Light: dual heal and beam
Staff of Light, Theocracy of Sitari. Two jobs in one scarce slot. Blinding beams that pierce, kneeling divination that heals. Sitari already lacks muskets, so this staff is both the missing rifle and the second medic.
Light ranks high on Wickland Manor and Remnants, where beams punish peaks and heals keep Sklirite bodies in the stairwell. Light ranks lower on a fair field against Ignia if you only beam from the lawn; you will lose a musket argument you were never supposed to have. Kneel behind Linemen. Beam the Officer who peeked. Do not pretend you are Earth.
The dual kit is why Light is easy to misplay. A Light Mage who never heals is a worse Doctor with a glow. A Light Mage who never beams is a Doctor who ate the mage cap. Do both, or leave the staff in the Church.
Death: the unique staff
Skeletal Staff, Descendants of Death. Necromancer. Not a coloured blast that mirrors Fire. Unique pressure, undead flesh, forest timing. Remnants and Final Stand are the natural homes. Little Green is not, unless a non-lore scramble dropped you there and you accepted the joke.
Death ranks as the specialist school. When the map is trees and ruins, it can outvalue Fire because Fire wanted a line that is not present. When the map is a ticket field, a Necromancer tourist is the reason people say Mage should stay capped. Unique is not automatic S. Unique is “read the loading card.”
If you queued Necromancer because the skull looked cool and you have Fire muscle memory, you will waste the cap. Go back to the mage guide. The dash still exists. The fireball does not.
Caps, slots, and when to refuse the class
Mage is often capped because these four kits swing rounds harder than a second Rifleman. The cap is a balance tool, not an insult. When the slot is full, you are not owed a rotation. Take Line Infantry, Healer, or Ensign.
When the slot is open, ask three questions:
- Do I know this school’s buttons on my device? Ctrl dash is a PC sentence. Mobile and console need the remap before the round, not during a channel.
- Does this map like my school? Earth and Fire like fields. Light likes interiors and peaks. Death likes forests and ruins.
- Does my team already have S-tier support? A Mage on a team with no flag is a luxury that will still lose tickets.
If the answer to any of those is no, refuse the cap. The class tier list already told you Mage is A, not a free S.
School versus nation
You cannot pick Earth on Ignia. You cannot pick Fire on Sitari. Faction select is school select. That is why the factions overview belongs in the same tab as this list. People who say “Mage is OP” usually mean “Earth on Little Green” or “Light on Wickland.” People who say “Mage is useless” usually mean they took Death onto a parade square.
Rank the pairing:
- Ignia on Little Green: Fire is good, not automatic. You still need muskets.
- Zemliya on Little Green: Earth is the best version of the class in the current playtest read.
- Sitari on Wickland: Light is the best version of the dual kit.
- DoD on Final Stand or Remnants: Death is the best version of unique.
- Anyone in a closet: dash, melee panic, and a prayer. None of the schools want a sabre fight.
Mana habits that actually change rank
Earth: spend on still clumps and reload animations, not on a Werewolf already in your ribs.
Fire: spend when three bodies share a hedge. Do not drip fireballs at a Rifleman who already left.
Light: split spend. One beam cycle, one heal cycle, repeat. All beam is ego. All heal is a wasted cap.
Death: spend to set pressure before the ambush, not after your Brute already died in the open.
All four: dash to leave melee, not to enter it. Mages have no sabre. The mage guide is the drill; this page is only the ranking that drill supports.
After the ranking
Do not screenshot this list and fight a teammate over a cap. Take the school your nation actually issued, or take a musket. Then play one full server in that school without swapping, because muscle memory is the real tier gap. Early access will move Earth rocks, Fire splash, Light heals, and whatever the Skeletal Staff is doing this week. The cap will probably stay, because four fantasy artillery pieces on one ticket map is how you stop having a musket game. That tension is the point of ranking mages at all.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for Muskets & Magic players.
Which mage school is strongest in early access?
Earth is the playtest read on open musket maps because rocks punish still targets at range. Light spikes on manor and ruins. Death spikes in forests. Fire is the honest line-support kit. None of this is an official Nanoplex ranking.
Why are Mage slots often capped?
The four foci swing rounds harder than another Rifleman. Caps keep public servers from becoming firework lobbies. If the slot is full, play Line Infantry or Healer.
Can I pick Fire Mage on Sitari?
No. Faction select is school select. Ignia fire, Zemliya earth, Sitari light, Descendants of Death necromancy.
Is Necromancer just a reskin?
No. The Skeletal Staff is a unique death kit. It does not throw Ignian fireballs. Treat it as a forest and ruins specialist.
Where do I learn Mage buttons?
The how-to-play Mage guide covers mana, dash, and school habits. This page only ranks the four foci for early-access rounds.
